GREEN JUICE.

You know when you make a green juice and it looks absolutely beautiful, but you put so many green healthies in it that you’re just a bit apprehensive to drink?

Yeah, me too. 🙂

However, this juice is green, energizing, tart, and cleansing. You’ll feel like a new person when you drink it. Don’t let all of the green ingredients deter you, it really does taste good! I prefer to drink it in the morning as breakfast after I have drank 1L of water. This juice recipe makes me feel squeaky clean and I feel that early morning fog vale just lift and disappear.

OLD HABITS.

You may be thinking, “Juice for breakfast. That’s it?!” If you’re used to eating a big plate of food in the morning, I understand that because that was also me. Every morning I used to eat about two cups of steel cut oats with maple syrup, butter, two fried eggs, three slices of bacon, and toast if I had it on hand.

I loved these big breakfasts. I felt like I needed them because I would always crash by noon. Little did I realize it was the big breakfasts causing the lunchtime crash. It took so much energy to digest them, that by lunchtime my body was completely spent.

THE POWER OF JUICE.

Fresh vegetable juice is energizing and filling because it quickly delivers nutrition that our body craves. When you pre-digest the food with a masticating juicer and then drink the juice; the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phytonutrients of those plants are quickly delivered to your blood stream through the epithelial cells of the intestinal wall lining. The epithelial cells have an important job, they police what should pass through the intestinal wall (nutrients) and what should not (potential threats) until exiting the body. When the epithelial cells are in working order, inflammatory responses are kept at a minimum.(1) However, if you experience inflammation throughout your body more than you’d care to, it’s a possible indicator that you could have holes in the gut lining – a leaky gut. ALKALINE DIET JUICE.

For the alkaline diet principles, this juice recipe is perfectly alkaline forming. If you are wanting to make small steps to include just one simple daily change to your meals, I’d add this juice recipe. Swapping this juice out for a regular meal will cover a huge portion of your daily greens. Unless you’re juice fasting, it’s important to also chew your greens because whole vegetables contain many more prebiotics that feed our gut bugs (probiotics).(3)

THE RECIPE.

Wash & Juice:

  • 1 Large Zucchini
  • 6-8 Celery Sticks
  • 2lbs. Carrots
  • 2 Kale Leaves
  • 1 Lemon
  • optional, 2 cups (about 1/2) Pineapple

Storage: To preserve any unfinished juice, store it in a glass jar in the fridge with the mindset to drink the rest of it that day. Fresh juice always tastes the best when you drink it closest to the pressed date.

NEWBIE JUICE TIPS.

TIP #1: If you haven’t tried fresh green juices before, depending upon your health starting point, it may inspire a flushing of sorts from your body (you’ll have to go poop… a lot). So long as it doesn’t become uncontrollable, I’d go with it. There’s nothing wrong with a good spring clean and you’ll probably feel a lot lighter on your toes!

TIP #2: If you want to sweeten up any alkaline juice recipe, just add pineapple to the mix. This will help, as it quickly sweetens a juice (negating bitterness) and contains enzymes to support digestion. Apples, while sweet, are often difficult to digest for sensitive tummies and may cause more bloating and discomfort than they’re worth. Apples are a fruit that is best eaten whole in my opinion.

FRUGAL TIPS.

TIP #1: Both celery and zucchini make great bulkers to a juice recipe because they are affordable, mild in flavor, and yield a lot of juice to fill the glass with enough ounces to be a complete meal. Between 16-32 ounces of juice can be considered a complete meal. (4)

TIP #2: Juice the lemon first and save the pulp to use with herbal tea recipes that require lemon.

TIP #3: Save the pulp of the zucchini, celery, and kale to either make raw crackers or veggie broth in the Instant Pot.

TIP #4: Give the zucchini, kale, and celery pulp to your fur babies so they can eat their greens too. If they’re squeamish, I’ve learned from my own that melted butter or coconut oil poured on top makes most anything taste delicious. They gobble it up, and it’s good for them too.

TIP #5: Feed everything except the citrus pulp to your wormies in the kitchen compost bin.

TIP #6: Or toss it! Juice pulp is biodegradable and there are much worse things going into the garbage. These bits of food scraps can potentially breed microbes to breakdown the other offensive wastes.
